What is ElectroWetting: Dipping a Toe into the Future of "Print"?

"...Electrowetting involves modifying the surface tension of liquids on a solid surface using a voltage. By applying a voltage, the wetting properties of a hydrophobic surface can be modified and the surface becomes increasingly hydrophilic (wettable)..."

HUH?

Right. Ok then.

I didn't think "wettable" was a word. Then I looked it up...in a book.

Electrowetting is the science behind low cost, flexible video-rate "e-paper". So cheap as to be considered disposable.

We've covered it before, nano technology and print. But this recent iteration is downright cheap.

The technology was recently demonstrated by Andrew Stecki at the University of Cincinnati demonstrated may change e-reading devices in the future, though.

"...With the right paper, the right process and the right device fabrication technique, you can get results that are as good as you would get on glass, and our results are good enough for a video-style e-reader..." - Stecki.

When your father's newspaper looks a bit like this, do we stop using the word "print"?

  1. Duh, this isn't new... Harry Potter figured it out a few years ago ;-) Gosh, Mr. Movie-Luvva!

  2. I'm telling you the future looks a lot like Total Recall. Remember the image wall in Arnie's apartment?

Holodecks, 3D, virtual worlds are soon in our future especially with this type technology. Imaging being in a space surrounded by walls with programmable images and visions. Make it 3D and plug in a bit of virtual and you have a primitive Star Trek holodeck.

How is the transporter technology coming? I know the chinese have the invisibility tech completed, just needs mass production.
