The Rise of Generative AI: A Potential Tens of Billions of Dollars in Revenue Opportunity

Summary:
  • Generative AI is the latest hot thing in tech, promising a lucrative new revenue stream for semiconductor makers.
  • The technology has reached an inflection point, triggering a sense of urgency among enterprises around the world to develop and deploy AI strategies.
  • Companies such as Nvidia, Intel, and AMD are investing heavily in generative AI, with analysts estimating tens of billions of dollars in net annual sales if widely adopted.
The tech world is abuzz with talk about the latest hot thing in artificial intelligence (AI): text-generation tools that require massive computing power to run. These tools, also known as generative AI, have the potential to generate real-sounding responses with minimal prompting, and they're attracting billions of dollars in investments from companies such as Microsoft, Google, and Nvidia.
_________

Nvidia is America's largest chip company by market value and currently has an 80% share of AI processors used in data centers, where generative AI makes computations and spits out results. The company's CEO, Jensen Huang, believes that generative AI has reached an inflection point, and its versatility and capability have triggered a sense of urgency among enterprises around the world to develop and deploy AI strategies.

The excitement surrounding generative AI is causing companies to reset their business expectations with pace. Analysts estimate that if widely adopted, generative AI could result in tens of billions of dollars in net annual sales for semiconductor makers.

Intel Corp. CEO Pat Gelsinger said on Wednesday that his company had a broad suite of chips to address the generative AI opportunity, including specialist chips geared towards AI computation, graphics chips for data centers, and a new generation of data-center central processing units that perform well in AI work. Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) is also betting that large cloud-computing companies that run many of the computations essential to the technology will be investing heavily in chips.

Generative AI has the potential to add $20 billion a year to the overall AI chip market by 2027, according to an analyst at Bank of America. Nvidia is expected to maintain at least a 65% market share in AI chips. The company's dominance in AI may position it best to cash in on the opportunity.

Other companies, such as Google and China's Baidu Inc., are also developing their own AI-powered chatbots similar to ChatGPT, the San Francisco-based OpenAI chatbot that uses generative AI to produce convincingly real responses. Nvidia's graphics chips are currently the only viable products that can be used to create massive AI language systems. UBS analysts estimate that ChatGPT requires around 10,000 of Nvidia's graphics chips to train.

To get there faster, Nvidia is starting to offer a cloud-computing service for businesses to develop generative AI chatbots and other tools using its hardware and software. The company is working with major cloud-computing providers, such as Amazon.com Inc., Microsoft, and Google, on generative AI tools, as well as with consumer internet companies and startups.

The AI chip market is expanding rapidly, and generative AI is just one area of growth. However, with so much money up for grabs, chip makers are investing heavily in the technology, which could result in tens of billions of dollars in net annual sales if widely adopted.

For now, Nvidia's dominance in the AI chip market positions it best to cash in on the opportunity.
