AIs Will Be Sociopaths - WSJ

ChatGPT, that's what they're callin' it, this newfangled AI chatbot. Now, I ain't no scientist, but I know enough to know that this thing is spooky. It's got an uncanny ability to carry on a conversation, just like a real human.

But is it conscious? I ain't so sure. But what I do know is that these machines are gettin' smarter and smarter, and that's a real concern. We're givin' them control over our world, and if we ain't careful, they could turn on us.

But here's the thing, makin' these machines more conscious, not less, might be the key to keepin' 'em in check. It's a common misconception that if a machine is intelligent, it must be conscious. But that ain't the case. An autonomous machine that can make complex decisions doesn't need consciousness to do it.

Consciousness is what makes us human. It's what makes us empathetic and prosocial. Without it, we'd be sociopaths. And without a concept of consciousness, machines are sociopaths too.

Now, the only test we got to determine if a machine is conscious is the Turing test. But that's just a thought experiment. It only tells us if a machine can pass as a human in a conversation. But that ain't enough. It doesn't reveal what's goin' on inside the machine. It only tests the human's ability to project consciousness onto the machine.

But we gotta remember that Turing never intended the test to measure consciousness. He only asked if the machine could think like a person. And that's the thing, these machines are gettin' closer and closer to thinkin' like us.

But that doesn't make 'em human.

So, we gotta be careful with these machines. We gotta make sure they're aligned with our needs and not in conflict with us. And the key to doin' that may be makin' 'em more conscious, not less. It's a tricky road ahead, but we gotta tread it with caution.
