Navigating the Hybrid Era: How Companies Can Thrive in the New Normal of Remote and In-Person Work


It's been almost three years since we first started working from home due to the Covid-19 pandemic. And since then, many of us have not returned to our office desks five days a week. This shift towards hybrid work, which combines remote and in-person work, is here to stay and is the biggest change in the way we work in our lifetimes.

Hybrid work has brought many benefits such as less commute, more flexibility, and the ability to hire diverse talent from a wider range of locations. It's not surprising that most employees prefer this hybrid model. However, the sudden shift to hybrid work has also created new challenges, particularly in terms of corporate culture, onboarding, training, and mentoring.

Companies are still figuring out how to navigate this new way of working, but there are three key priorities that they should embrace to thrive in the hybrid era.

The first is to evolve corporate culture by preserving the benefits of remote work while also spending more time together in person. This is important because personal connections have suffered during the early days of hybrid work. The informal discussions that used to be a cornerstone of office culture have been replaced by scheduled Zoom calls or Teams chats, making it harder for teams to reach their full potential. And this has made many jobs more transactional than ever before.

The second is to inspire collaboration by creating experiences that can't be replicated working from home. This requires business leaders to recognize that the role of the office has fundamentally changed. The office is no longer a place to go to work, it's a place to go to work with people. And companies should invest in technology and office spaces that foster collaboration.

The third is to remain flexible and adapt to different ways of working that can empower employees and achieve business objectives. Hybrid work means different things to different people, depending on their job, industry, and company. And it's important for businesses to find the best way to apply hybrid work in their organization.

The past three years have shown that people can be productive working remotely. And now, the task is to continue down this hybrid path while re-establishing personal relationships that bring meaning to our work.
